Untitled, 2020 l Stephen Linsteadt

Untitled, 2020, oil on canvas, 193 x 216 cm, 2020

I went from food insecurity in "The End of the Line" to homelessness. I wanted to focus on the tent cities that arose from joblessness caused by the pandemic, as opposed to the lack of shelter for refugees or the impoverished. My reaction, most likely, came from the fact that I could see myself in a tent city. I think somewhere lurking in our reptilian brains is the fear of food scarcity and the fear of being harmed. Perhaps this is the reason I was so moved by the images of tent cities. It may also account for why most of us look away.

The painting is titled "Untitled, 2020" because I can't find the words to describe the feelings involved. I can't even write a poem about it. I did add brightly colored doors and windows to the tents to give a sense of hope-the windows and doors of opportunity.
